How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth?

Horizon - BBC2/9:00pm-10:00pm - Wed 9 Dec

David Attenborough investigates the consequences of population growth - from 2.5 billion in 1950 to 7 billion people today- both on humans and the environment. While most of this increase has come from developing countries, studies suggest western lifestyles take an unfair share of the planet's resources, as the naturalist argues that a change in the way we live and even smaller families might be needed if mankind is to survive on Earth.

Hi everyone, I've got a couple of things to tell you:

Firstly, there will be a Seed Swap on Friday 4th December, 6pm-7pm, at the White Lion (232 Streatham High Road).

Secondly, the White Lion is now a collection point for organic food boxes delivered by Abel & Cole. If you're concerned about having your box left outside all day, just have it delivered to the White Lion and collect it at your own convenience. For more information, either pop into the White Lion or contact Genevieve at Abel & Cole. To see the benefits of using an organic box scheme, just click here.

All the best,
Gavin

Can anyone help? I work for a community project in Balham/Clapham Park and we have 3/4 of an acre land including space used to grow food. We are looking to expand our food growing but have a lack of expertise and structure to the operation. We would love someone to come in and have a look at the set-up and help us to plan the coming year...if you could provide some on-going support aswell, even better.

Please contact me ASAP as we are looking to get things in place quickly is possible.

Cheers.

Dear SuS

For those of you not on the mailing list.

I bring you news of our 1st Film from Scott Ainslie, our Film Convenor. Venue details will be sent. Any questions you can send to either me or to Scott at film@sustainablestreatham.org.uk. See you there.

From Scott

Dear friends

Please join us for SuS's screening of this film & post discussion on Friday 4th December at 7.30pm at the Streatham Business Centre-opposite Streatham train station. (directions to venue will be sent separately).

‘Home’ http://www.home-2009.com

‘Home is a visually-stunning 90minute documentary that takes us on an aerial view of over 50 different countries, displaying some of the most breathtaking imagery our planet has to offer. Throughout the entire film, narrator Glenn Close explains how our planet’s border less ecosystem is an endangered species, and that the resources we’ve been continuously farming (especially within the last hundred years or so) are on the verge of being depleted.’

The documentary shows the awful truths regarding our impact on the Earth, but also what we are now doing to combat and reverse it: including renewable energy, the creation of more and more national parks, international co-operation between various nations on environmental issues and the extra education and reforms across the globe in response to the current problems facing the earth.

As the world leaders prepare for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on December 7th, http://en.cop15.dk/, SuS aims to enlighten and engage on a local level to see what further positive steps we can take as a community.

We hope to see you there.

Best Wishes

Scott Ainslie
