I'd like to get involved in a green project but where should I start?

Do you want to help get some veg growing going in the garden at the BBC bar. I have the boxes and compost but haven't yet got around to taking them there. It needs someone who can visit once a week...

About Me:
Since February I have been employed as Green Communities Officer at Lambeth. My main role is to inspire people to set up green communities in their neighbourhoods, and support those groups through networking, fundraising and hand-holding/mentoring.
I am co-founder of the Hyde Farm Climate Action Network (Hyde Farm CAN), based around a Victorian/Edwardian housing estate in Balham, South London.
Hyde Farm residents have been getting together to work out how we can reduce our carbon emissions significantly. A particular focus has been how to improve the energy efficiency of our difficult-to-treat homes. I have demonstrated in my own home that at least a 40% reduction on household carbon emissions is possible by taking simple measures such as treating windows and draught-proofing, combined with behaviour change.
Hyde Farm CAN was a finalist in the Big Green Challenge run by NESTA. Hyde Farm CAN members plotted ways in which they could reduce the average carbon footprint of a Hyde Farm household by 60%. They aim to communicate this through a series of fun and practical workshops and gatherings. Examples include energy awareness evenings, draught-busting Saturdays, seed swaps, composting workshops and fruit-picking.
I believe that many people want to reduce their impact on the environment but don’t quite know how to do it. By offering practical solutions that help overcome these knowledge barriers, and other barriers, such as lack of time, Hyde Farm residents have started to take action to reduce their carbon emissions, and to talk about this, generating a buzz in the community.
We have received a lot of press interest. I ams a Green Ambassador for the Energy Saving Trust and have been featured on several news programmes to talk about household energy efficiency and food growing in small spaces. In September 2008 the Prime Minister Gordon Brown came to visit my house.
I am a 2009 London Leader.
Key Interests

Cold December

I have been closely monitoring my energy use for over a year now, and recording year-on-year reductions each month. So I was very fearful that with December's cold weather, and the fact that we have been at home and indoors over the whole holiday, our gas use would be much higher than last year. In fact it was higher - but not by as much as I had expected. Clearly all that draught-proofing and the secondary glazing is having some effect. Still using far too much energy though overall...

London Leader 2009

I am going to be announced as a London Leader for 2009 tonight at the Royal Society. Wise Women are holding a speaker event tonight and are also going to mention it - Wise Woman becomes London Leader.. or similar. So my ears will be twitching.
London Leaders is a voluntary programme, but I want to use it to ffurther the momentum that is already gathering in South London especially. I don't know exactly what I will be doing yet, but something along the lines of supporting people to set up low car… Continue

Just found out I do have a place to blog after all

Mark has asked me to start blogging... just try and stop me!
We had the second Balham Green Drinks last night - another great show. So many interesting new people to meet.. and a real sense that we can support one another to take action. Looking forward to getting low energy light bulbs in the BBC bar and to our next drinks on 8th January when we are going to focus on brainstorming an ESCO for Balham - what might it look like?, what models could we learn from?, what resources would we need?, is… Continue

Hi Sue
Thanks for setting up Green Drinks as a PD event... I'm planning to come, as I just got back in town! Just to check, have you booked the 'normal' table?
Thanks, Nick

Hi Sue,

Good to see you the other day in Brockwell Park. Do send me an email about green spacey type stuff and St Mungo's potential involvement. Claudia.ruane@mungos.org.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for getting back to me - we might try to come along this sunday. If not, I'll check with my fellow gardeners to see if they can make it on the 2nd Aug instead.

Best wishes,
Emma

Hi Sue,

I'm part of a small group who have been allocated a small patch of land by Wandsworth Council, to transform into a community garden. We have lots of enthusiasm but limited expertise, and are keen to visit other sucessful community gardens to see how they work.

Would it be possible to visit Hyde Farm, and have a chat with someone about how the garden was set up?

Many thanks,
Emma

Hi Sue

Re: Wood Recycling

Can we possibly meet up some time in relation to your work with Lambeth. I am now looking to set up a management board for the scheme. The biggest issue we have is premises. Thought you might be able to put in a word on our behalf with Lambeth.

I already have contacts in Housing but not had a positive responce. So any help would be greatfully received.

Also I am Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor any way I can help out with your Hyde Farm initiative let me know.

Hi Sue, there isn't strictly a link through to an event - you have to edit the text on the project page and then add a link to the event by writing 'click here' or whatever you want to say and then click the little link button at the top of the edit text box and paste in the link (by opening another page, going to the event and copying and pasting it from the browser). Hope that makes sense. With regards to Big Green Challenge stuff, would it be OK to ask Mark as I'm doign less and less PD stuff at the moment - in need of earning some cash! Best of luck with the event. Jess

I've heard great things about your project and hoped that you might be willing to spread the happiness a bit further.
On Sat 26 Sept I am helping to run the Wandsworth Green Fair being hosted at the Friends Meeting House in Wandsworth High Street. I'm running the energy section and wondered whether you'd be able to come and give some practical tips on draught-proofing, secondary glazing and general energy-saving - ideally with a couple of props.
What do you think?
Best

Oli
